Emergency Preparedness for Pet Owners

By Randy Salars
Quick Answer โ€” Preparedness

Emergency planning that includes your pets. Evacuation with animals, pet supply storage, shelter policies, and species-specific considerations.

โœ๏ธ Randy Salars

67% of American households have pets. But most emergency plans pretend they don't exist.

Your pet is family. Your emergency plan should include them.

The #1 Mistake: No Pet Plan

During Hurricane Katrina, 44% of people who refused to evacuate did so because they couldn't take their pets. This led to the PETS Act of 2006, requiring emergency plans to account for animals.

The lesson: people won't leave without their animals. So the plan must include them.

Pet Emergency Essentials

๐Ÿ• Pet Go-Bag

Must-Have:

  • โ€ข 3-5 days of food (sealed, rotated quarterly)
  • โ€ข Collapsible water bowl
  • โ€ข Medications with dosage instructions
  • โ€ข Vaccination records (copies)
  • โ€ข Recent photo of your pet (for identification)
  • โ€ข Leash, carrier, or crate

Important:

  • โ€ข Comfort item (familiar toy/blanket)
  • โ€ข Waste bags / litter + portable pan
  • โ€ข Pet first aid basics
  • โ€ข Microchip number and registry info
  • โ€ข Vet's contact information
  • โ€ข Feeding schedule documentation

๐Ÿจ Know Your Shelter Options

Not all emergency shelters accept pets (even after PETS Act). Research now, not during the emergency:

  • โ€ข Pet-friendly shelters in your area (call your county emergency management)
  • โ€ข Hotels/motels outside your area that accept pets (keep a list)
  • โ€ข Friends/family outside your risk zone who can host you and pets
  • โ€ข Boarding facilities and their emergency policies
  • โ€ข Veterinary clinics that offer emergency boarding

๐Ÿฑ Species-Specific Considerations

๐Ÿ• Dogs

  • โ€ข Practice crate comfort before emergencies
  • โ€ข Updated rabies tags at all times
  • โ€ข Muzzle (even friendly dogs stress)

๐Ÿˆ Cats

  • โ€ข Pillowcase as emergency carrier
  • โ€ข Cats hide when stressed โ€” know their spots
  • โ€ข Portable litter pan + small bag of litter

๐Ÿฆ Birds / Small Pets

  • โ€ข Transport cage always accessible
  • โ€ข Temperature sensitivity planning
  • โ€ข Cover cage to reduce stress

๐Ÿด Large Animals

  • โ€ข Evacuation trailer arrangements
  • โ€ข Pre-identified alternate housing
  • โ€ข Identification markings / photos

If You Must Leave Without Them

Sometimes you can't take pets. If that happens:

  • โ€ข Never leave them chained or crated โ€” they need to be able to find safety
  • โ€ข Leave extra water in multiple large containers
  • โ€ข Leave food accessible (not measured โ€” excess is fine)
  • โ€ข Place a rescue alert sticker on your door with species and count
  • โ€ข Notify animal control and a neighbor
